Three Plants for the Urban Male

By a raise of green thumbs, how many of you guys own a plant?

That’s what we thought. In today’s technologically advanced society, most guys don’t think they have any need for a plant. They’re dirty, needy, hard to please, and… well, a lot like your ex. If you wanted a plant, you would either find a nice simulated one for your iPhone, or a cheap plastic number to impress the ladies you bring over to your bachelor pad.

Well, I have a different viewpoint to offer you. According to NASA, who has not much else to do these days, the typical houseplant can not only boost oxygen levels in your air (and blood), it can decrease the amount of toxins you breath every day. Now let’s think about that for a moment. One pot, a few pounds of soil, a living plant, and you could actually improve your health by a measurable amount (assuming you are not allergic to plants).

To take advantage of all this, a guy needs three types of plants. The first is a palm, the Areca Palm to be exact. This plant is one of the most effective species in removing carbon dioxide from your air throughout the day, and replace it with oxygen. As we know, most plants give off carbon dioxide at night as you sleep. This is where the second plant comes in.

The Snake Plant (also known as the Mother-in-law’s tongue) is a night owl of sorts. It oxygenates the air at night, which means the combination of these two plants will boost the oxygen level in your blood around the clock. A Money Plant is the third plant we recommend, as this one specializes in eliminating the fumes from air pollution, cigarette smoke, and formaldehyde (furniture, adhesives, etc.).

Best of all, these plants are not difficult to maintain. Just give them a window, a splash of water every week or two, and if you’re really feeling generous, a little fertilizer.
