Koenigsegg Regera Hybrid Megacar Likes Soft Music, Hates Losing Races

Christian von Koenigsegg is at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show this week showing off his brand new hypercar, the Regera. We’ve waited a long time for someone to come along and ‘one-up’ the hypercar, and it appears that Koenigsegg has done it. He prefers to call his Regera a “Megacar” because it is currently one of the most powerful production cars in the world, boasting over 1500 horsepower with a 0 to 240 mph launch in only 20-seconds.

With that said, it is also a very quiet and tame car when it wants to be. Its 9 kWh battery pack can maintain 31 extremely quiet miles on electric-only mode, which isn’t too bad as electric hypercars (megacars) go. If you prefer the noise and hate to lose races, its 5.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 is worth a staggering 1100 hp. And when we get out our calculators, 1100 hp plus a 700 horsepower electric motor adds up to… well, a lot more than both the LaFerrari and Porsche 918.

But that kind of hardware won’t come inexpensively as you can imagine, coming in at around $1.9 million. However, we can assure you that Koenigsegg has spared no expense. One of the neat features on this car is its flappy paddle box on the steering wheel. Yes, electric cars have no need for gears, so it is basically a simple way for the driver to communicate with the Regera.

Utilizing the paddles a driver can put the Regera into park, neutral, drive or reverse. One ultra-cool feature is when the car is in drive and the batteries are depleted, yet you really really want to take advantage of its extra 700 electric horsepower. Then what you do is hold the flaps to signal the car to enter into “power regeneration mode’. This charges the battery at an accelerated rate, so when you release the flaps, the Regera will rocket off into the sunset at a blistering rate of acceleration.
